Ancient Rome, Free Essay Sample

Ancient Rome Introduction Ancient Rome is a huge topic to cover in one essay, since it encompasses several hundred years of territorial expansion, literary development, and political workings. However, there are certain times and points within that huge history which it is particularly important to bring up, and those are what we will focus on in this essay. From the initial founding of Rome to the literary development of the syllabus and arts, this essay aims to look at various points of Ancient Rome to give an overview of it to the audience. Physical The civilisation of Rome was something which eventually took root on the shores of the Tiber, over the fabled seven hills of Rome (which actually reach a number which is higher than seven, but the myth endures). Rome was initially a kingdom, but the shepherds and traders who made up most of the populace eventually became tired of their excesses, ad declared themselves a republic. The Republic of Rome was initially just the area surrounding the Tiber and reaching to the coast, but eventually they expanded throughout Italy, and beyond to other parts of the Mediterranean. Romans and Greeks are often found in the same sentence – they were in the same region of the world and their timelines overlapped somewhat (although the golden age of Greece had come and gone again by the time Rome reached its supremacy). That is where the similarities end, however; Romans and Greeks were more different than similar. Where Athens and other Greek cities focused their attentions on philosophy and drama of various sorts, Rome was known for its engineering feats – the roads are the most famous example, but Rome’s aqueducts are also a marvel of what could be done with their technological level. Rather than looking into the more flexible aspects of morality, Roman society stressed the importance of a strict moral character, expressing the strength of a man (and sometimes a woman) who could show a strong mind paired with a strong body. At least at first, the main point of physical training for boys and young men was to equip them for military service in Rome’s vast and growing armies. Where the Greeks had an entire body of work on how physical training was part of making a body beautiful, with the body beautiful being the ultimate goal, Rome was much more practical. A good Roman was one who could serve the state through the military. Mental As Rome grew, their education necessarily changed, as they saw the need for a more equipped civil service to control their environment, and were exposed to more and new learning through the territories they captured. This was also in part due to the material changes which had taken place in the Roman world; rather than having Roman citizens make up the bulk of the army, mirrored legions known as auxiliaries (made up of non-citizens) were taking over more and more of the fighting, leaving Romans to be administrators and law-makers. Education was at first handled in the home, but as the curriculum swelled, boys at least (girls were kept at home to learn the home arts from their mothers) were sent out to schools, which were normally administered by Greek slaves with educations of their own. The traditional Greek education of grammar and epic was joined by a Roman syllabus of oratory\rhetoric and the memorisation of the Twelve Tables, which contained all the laws of Rome. For most of its history, the Roman curriculum preferred the more practical arts, as they were at heart a more practical people than others who has come before them. This has been borne out by their legacy to us, which has mostly come in the form of various pieces of legislation, and great pieces of architecture and engineering. However, eventually the sheer weight of the Roman Empire and its spoils broke the moral backbone of Roman education, as the hard work which had previously attended on its education was gradually eroded by the inclusion of slave labour. War The Romans had created a militaristic society – this was one reason for their continual expansion – and the result (combined with their technological expertise) had them conquering much of the Mediterranean and Europe with relative ease. However eventually outlying tribes began to t4st their strength against a Roman Empire which had become bloated with its own successes, finding that it could no longer defend itself in the manner they once had. Society While there was an extremely rich Roman elite, the majority of the Romans were extremely poor, relying on the corn dole to survive. This, along with the magnificent games and pageants which were held in celebration of Rome’s many public holidays was the origin of the famous ‘bread and circuses’ phrase which we are familiar with today. Gladiatorial games and chariot races served many purposes, both in terms of entertainment, moral teaching, and desensitisation for the multitudes. These games involved a number of different types of gladiator and types of fight to animals against humans, animals against animals, and even sea battles (flooding the amphitheatre to create the necessary environment). The ever-changing diet of gladiatorial games and other feats of strength were eventually said to have brought down the games themselves. As has been said, there was originally a moral value to the games, in that they were seen as an expression of glory to the Gods, and were also useful as a means to show the ultimate glory that was the Roman Empire over its enemies. Eventually, however, the games deteriorated into purely entertainment, and lost the ability to sway others. One other influence the Romans took from the Greeks (as well as possibly the Etruscans) was their penchant for using baths as a way to clean themselves and relax. We have many ruins of the Roman baths, because they were at the end entirely huge complexes made of multitudes of rooms for different purposes. However, while the Greeks normally had exercise halls and courtyards attached to their bathing facilities, the Romans did not; they seem to have preferred bathing to be an entirely social and sedentary affair. The Roman Empire eventually split in two, with the Byzantine Empire becoming more and more estranged from its twin. While the Roman Empire was said to have died in the fifth century, its mantle truly passed to the tribes and clans which had won Rome from its last incumbents. However, while it did continue to exist in various forms, the Roman Empire never again had the same influence on the world around it, and eventually sank into relative oblivion.

Themes of The Tempest - Free Essay Example

The Tempest is a play written by William Shakespeare, and has the many themes. Different versions of Power like Control,Disloyal, Forgiveness and revenge. In the play Shakespeare says Farewell Master (Act 2, Scene 2) this made me to believe that Caliban was a slave. Basically giving notice that Caliban didnt have any power. Caliban was under a spell Prosperos put on him so he basically did become a slave to him. Prosperos took advantage of him. This also indicates Caliban has a low title in the community because he obeys Prospero, but on the other hand listen to anyone but himself. So you can see whose title is higher than the others. This situation somewhat isstrates diversity in the play. Shakespeare doesnt give you false allegations of Calibans charter, initially the reader will assume that his status is low. He is weak and powerless because he is not honoured with a human shape ( Act 1, Scene 2) . Trying to down talk him basically compared him to animal. Saying he is beneath Prospero. This is how the illusion and magic theme basically starts because of the power Prospero put out to control Calibian into the inhuman slave. Shakespeare shows many ways how magic controls the entities. Although Prospero treats Ariel as a servant , and Caliban as a slave they still hold different positions in the chain. One of the main biggest themes in this play is hatred and revenge between everyone. Prospero came and took the island from Caliban. Which makes him infuriated and revengeful. In my opinion, Shakespeare uses the theme of hatred,continuously and especially here because it shows that Prospero uses hatred to mistreat Caliban and to show a comparison in the treatment between Ariel and Caliban. When the writer says lying slave it shows us Caliban is not trustworthy. This links to the character Ariel, as she owes Prospero and to repay him she offers herself to become his servant. The reason Ariel is in debt to Prospero is because he released her from a tree where Sycorax confined her, so she has no choice but to obey Prospero orders, however Caliban does not which shows the comparison between the two characters.. Additionally, it suggests that Ariel treated humanely and Caliban is treated the opposite way, contrasting the two characters. This links to the other themes present in the tex t, such as revenge and reconciliation because we can infer that Caliban and Prospero will try to conspire against each other or to usurp and take away each others authority. When Shakespeare says The isle is full of noises this makes the reader think the island is full of magical creature like Caliban, Ariel and much more. Calibans speech is extremely significant and compelling; largely because of how unique it is from anything he has said before. Caliban regularly describes the intrinsic worth of the island, but commonly these descriptions recount to the torments Prospero subjects him to. Shakespeare has done this to take the reader into a hypnotic dream world. Caliban is intoxicated when he gives this speech, and while it absolutely brings the audience to rapt attention, the speech does not do a lot to transform Calibans character and it also reveals a deeply tragic side of Caliban. His life on the island is so dreadful that he longs for the ethereal world of the noises that give him delight .In my opinion Caliban is telling Trinculo and Stephano not to worry however Caliban does not seem to know where the noises are coming from. The theme this links t o illusion and magic because magic and illusions are used to take the reader to a magical world. When Shakespeare says red plague rid you for language me your language! this makes the reader believe that Calibans relationship with Prospero and Miranda is not good. This speech, delivered by Caliban to Prospero and Miranda, makes clear in a very brief form the vexed relationship between the colonized and the colonizer that lies at the heart of this play. The son of a witch, conceivably half-man and half-monster, his name a near-anagram of cannibal, Caliban is an archetypal savage shape in a play that is much concerned with colonization and the controlling of untamed environments. Shakespeare has done this to show how Caliban use the language he was taught by Miranda. It is only a regular reminder of how he is dissimilar from Miranda and Prospero and how they have transformed him from what he was. In my opinion the writer does this to compare how they treated Caliban before and how they treat him now. This links to this theme change and transformation because we can see Calibans be haviour and attitude towards Prospero and how large his desire for freedom is. When the writer says I might call him a thing divine this makes the reader think Miranda is attracted to Ferdinand. Ferdinand and Mirandas type relationship shows Shakespeares ideas about true love, recognising not just the emotional side of love, but the physical nature as well. Shakespeare does to show how Miranda relationship with Ferdinand is different to Prospero. We can infer that Ferdinand is attract to Miranda because in Latin origin meaning worthy of admiration. In my opinion Shakespeares has done this to show the relationship between them. This links to theme like change and transformation because Miranda change when she met Ferdinand and how her love towards Ferdinand. When Shakespeare states that being once perfected how to grant it influences the readers belief that Prospero was once a respectable man with a high status before a previous event. The Tempest, like many of Shakespeares plays, has sustained to elicit a broad variety of scholarly interpretations and has eluded any conclusive judgements as to its dominant themes or the nature of its character.

During the late 19th century and the early 20th century, European countries began their scramble for Africa which caused African to suffer from violence like wars, slavery and unfairness, but there was also a positive, peaceful and diplomatic consequences and events in Africa like fair trade system, new technology and the security given to Africans under European rule. An additional document written by an African commoner would help to further assess the African actions and reactions by telling what happened to them during that time period and their reaction towards that issue. I have learnt that the terms differ with management bringing in steadiness and order taking in the structures of the organization and formal plans. Leadership is something that focuses on coping with the alterations. I got to know about the different forms of leadership like the authentic leadership, charismatic leadership along with transformational and transactional. After learning everything about the different forms of leadership that exists in entrepreneurship I have been able to identify myself with the authentic leadership style that is related to individuals who understands themselves, important in every sphere of life. If one is not being able to understand his true self, as a leader he would not be able to understand others and their needs. I am that sort of person who does everything with my heart, something that is done by the authentic leaders. I have started understanding the behaviors of leaders and trying to relate the same with mine. Leaders do need to establish mutual trust and share their feelings with the subordinates at every level. A leader as per my understanding needs to be a mixture of employee centered and job-centered where supportive behavior is as important as meeting the work deadlines (Tedmanson and Evans 2017.). Every leadership style needs to be supportive to its subordinates. I do not possess all the skills that a leader should have but I am getting to know the traits required to be one. Innovation is something that is required big time for leaders, it is important in being creative, I understand it is something that one cannot bring in overnight, it is something that is generally inborn, one should have the ability to come up with new ideas. Not everybody possesses that luxury, but then with experience great leaders learn a lot of things.
